The man on the fruit stall in Tewkesbury says the lads from the lane whistle my bits back at me when I'm up a tree. I told him I've never sung in tune in my life. You were the one who could hear a kettle and name its key. She played it through on Thursday with the windows open, and the whole orchard went quiet except for the blackbirds, who seemed to know the second bar better than the rest of us. She asked who wrote it. I said the wasps, mostly.

Come up in September and bring the good pencil. The ladder's still propped against the Conference trees, and there's a curly clef at the bottom of the page that looks like a question mark somebody dropped in the grass. I can't get its tail right. Love, Jo.
