Treble clef and music notes on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a black treble clef with two quaver notes hanging below it, drawn in thin, even linework. The design is filled in solid black with no shading, and the ink is the only colour in the image. The leg is photographed from the side at close range, with the tattoo centred on the ankle and a tiled floor and a shoe visible behind.

Hush now and pass me that cup, because I'm not telling this twice. You want to know why nobody on the Kennet hums on a lock gate? It starts with old Tobias Greave, who kept a fiddle in the cabin of the Marigold and a tune he never once managed to finish.

Every evening he played the same four bars as the lock filled, and every evening the water rose to meet them. Then one wet October the rain came in sideways and the gate jammed halfway. Greave climbed out with his bow between his teeth and a pair of brass quavers in his coat pocket, bought from a fairground stall for his granddaughter's birthday. He dropped them. They sank like two bright fish and lodged in the silt under the sill, and the clef he'd sewn to his lapel went with them.

Next morning the lock would not drain. The water stood as still as slate and nobody could say why, until Nell Ashby, the lock-keeper's girl, sat on the bank with her boots off and sang the missing bar back at the river. The gate groaned, the quavers came up through the mud, and the Marigold floated free with Greave singing the tune he'd forgotten he knew.

So that's your treble clef, see, the key that opens the lock, and those two notes that fell in after it. Don't go climbing the gates in those wellies, and whatever you do, don't hum by the sill.
