Namaste script on the forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single word, Namaste, is written in thin black script with a long, unbroken stroke rising from the first letter. A small ornate symbol follows the final letter, and the linework is even and crisp. The photograph is black and white, with the pale skin filling most of the frame against a dark background.

Sit down on the landing, the lot of you, because the lift is dead again and I am not climbing another flight on these knees. Halstead House, nineteen sixty-four. There was a boy on the fourth floor called Ravi Kohli who flew a kite off the roof every Sunday, a red paper thing his father folded from the back of a seed packet. He never once let the string snap. He wound it round a cotton reel until his fingers went white, and the line ran from his hands up over the parapet, one long thin stroke you could follow with your eye from the car park to the clouds.

The estate men said he'd bring the whole block down with that string. Mr Dobbs the caretaker wanted it cut. But the boy kept it going all summer, and when the wind dropped he sat on the roof edge and waited, and everyone waited with him. Old women leaned out of their windows to watch the red speck dip and rise. Nobody asked him why he bothered. I suppose you don't ask a boy why he's happy.
One evening in September the string went, not in his hands but at the reel, a knot in the cotton worn through. The kite drifted off east over the gasworks and was gone. He came down four flights with the empty reel and stood in our doorway, and my mother, who had nothing in her cupboards but dal and patience, pressed her palms together and said namaste. He bowed back, and that was the whole of it.
Nine floors of stairs, love, and that's the bit I want you to keep. The kite was a loss. The bow was not. Now up you get, and mind the gap on the sixth landing.
