Nautical and outline stars on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The photograph shows a tattoo of stars across the upper arm and shoulder of a woman wearing a black corset with pink ribbon trim. Two larger black nautical stars with shaded points sit among smaller solid pink stars, pink and black outline stars and tiny black dots. The bold black linework and shading contrast with the flat pink fills, and the plain indoor background keeps the focus on the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide turned an hour ago, and the lad who minds the sea wall has just sent word that the patrol launch is two bends down the estuary. You stand with your boots in the mud and look up. Your father taught you the nautical star before he taught you your letters: five sharp points, a shape like a folded napkin, the one that stays put while everything else wheels past. Tonight the sky above the frontier posts is scattered with small lights that look as if someone flicked them there carelessly.

The crossing is simple on paper. Forty minutes in a dinghy, a crate of cheese wrapped in oilcloth under the thwart, a name on a list that reads like a cough. Mira, who keeps the bar on the quay and has never once been wrong about weather, passes you the chart with a thumbprint of diesel on one corner. 'Steer by the big black one,' she says, tapping a star she has inked beside the lighthouse. 'The little ones are for people who panic.'

Halfway over, the launch's searchlight sweeps the water and lands on nothing but a buoy painted in the co-op's faded pink. You keep your hand on the tiller and count the points of the star you were told to trust. Five. You count again. The beam swings away and you laugh under your breath, because the chart is upside down, and the ring of outlined stars Mira drew in the margin lines up exactly with the cliff path.

On the far shore the cheese goes into a van, and you go into a kitchen where a woman in a wet coat hands you tea without asking your name. Through the window the clouds have pulled back. You find the big black star above the headland, then the pink ones scattered around it, and you trace the route you already know by heart.
