Matching kawaii flower and star forearm tattoos

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two mirrored tattoos sit on the inner forearms, each with pink flowers that have simple cartoon faces, a large outlined star with a white or pale centre, and a black filled star with a face. Small blue, green and pink stars and dots scatter around the motifs. The linework is bold and clean, with flat colour fills and minimal shading, and the arms are centred against a plain black background.

Dear Nan,

The ewes have started lambing early, which Dad says is the frost's fault and Mum says is the tup's, and nobody has asked me. I was up at four with the lantern. The trough by the far gate had frozen solid, so I broke the skin of ice with the heel of a bucket and found three little stars underneath, pale as saucers and so clean they looked washed on purpose.

The frost on the kitchen window has grown flowers this week, pink-edged and round, each with two dots for eyes and a smile that Owen says is the stove's doing. He spent Sunday painting black stars onto the lids of the feed bins, one with a face like a moon that's been up too late. He calls it the sensible one. The other star he gave a white middle, like a sweet you're not allowed yet.

Last night I held the lamp up to the glass and the flowers seemed to shuffle closer to one another, the way the lambs do when the wind turns. Owen swears he saw them do it too, and then he went very quiet and asked me to pass the salt. I scraped a clear circle to see the yard, but the blossoms had already made their faces at me, so I left the rest of the window alone. I'm writing this by their light. Tell Grandad the stars have stopped falling into the trough, which I think is his fault for talking about them.

Love, Ruth
