A sheet of black and white tattoo designs arranged on a plain white background. The motifs include an origami crane, feather, key, two crosses, a sugar skull, an anchor, a paper plane, a heart, a diamond, an arrow, a leopard head, a bow and several triangle and star shapes, with script words such as paradise and Monsieur. The designs use simple outlines and solid black fills, with no shading or colour.

Mrs Adeyemi on the eleventh floor kept the spare key to every flat in Hollis House on a loop of string round her neck, and she never used it without knocking first. "You don't open a door on somebody's quiet," she told me, the summer I was sent up to read the electric meters. "You wait till they answer."

I was fourteen and had nothing to do but fold. The council letters came in brown envelopes and I turned them into planes, then cranes once the planes kept diving into the bins. From the roof you could see the ring road, the gasworks and, on a good day, pigeons lifting off the car park all at once. Mrs Adeyemi said the birds were the only thing in Hollis House that never asked for rent.
The afternoon the lift broke for the third time, she climbed the stairs with me behind her, one hand on the rail, counting landings under her breath the way my gran counted beads. At the top she didn't stop to catch her breath. She reached for the roof door with the spare key, and it was already open, a feather wedged in the gap where the frame had warped.
She picked it up, turned it against the light and handed it to me. "Whoever was up here before us folded things worth keeping," she said, and nodded at the paper plane in my pocket. I still have the feather. The plane I threw off the edge that afternoon is somewhere in the car park still, I'm told, waiting for someone to open a door on it.
