A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flash sheet had been nailed to the potting shed wall since May, and by August the rain had got into the card and curled its corners up like the petals of a spent rose. Dad drew every motif on it himself, in Indian ink, at the kitchen table, then spent the summer pretending he didn't care whether the fete committee bought a copy. Two were unfinished. The feather had its quill and nothing else, and beside the crescent moon he'd pencilled a word in his cramped capitals, then rubbed half of it away with his thumb. I could still make out the first letters. Mum used to say he never finished anything he was afraid of getting wrong. The rain had stopped by the time I found the old bottle of ink behind the seed trays, and the shed smelled of tomato leaves and paraffin.

I drew the feather first, badly, then the moon, which was easier because it only needed one clean curve and a hand that didn't shake. The arrows I left alone. I wrote the word out in his style, letting the L stand a little too tall, and blotted it on the back of a seed packet. Then I pinned the sheet back up with two new drawing pins and took a photograph in the failing light.

On the screen the moon looked almost finished. Of all the words on the sheet, only the one he had rubbed at still had the dent of his thumb in the paper, and I left it there.
