Sugar skull woman on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A sugar skull woman with long, flowing hair and a flower tucked above her ear is tattooed down the upper arm, facing right. The linework is bold and dark, with grey shading on the skull and hair and small pink touches on the cheeks and lips. A small red heart sits near the lower edge of the frame against a plain grey background, and the wearer's face is not shown.

Dear Tomas,

The boats came in at four this morning, all but the Sorrel, and Mrs Pryce has been down at the slip every hour since, pretending she is only counting gulls. I have told her the Sorrel is slow, that you were always the one who stopped to watch the lighthouse lamp, but she does not want telling. I took her a flask of tea and sat with her on the wet boards while the fog lifted off the harbour wall.
You will laugh at me, but I finished the altar on Thursday. Father Keane let us have the back room of the chapel for the Day of the Dead, and the children strung paper flags across the window. I painted a sugar skull for the table, the one with the paper rose tucked over its ear, the way Grandmother wore a flower when she went to the market. Her long hair I did in black ink on card, combed down over one shoulder, because I could not bear to give her short hair. Pryce's girl pinned a real marigold beside it and cried when she saw it finished.
Tomas, the wind has swung round to the north and the glass is falling. Come home by the Tuesday tide if you can. Bring the small red tin of tacks Dad left you, and I will keep the heart-shaped cake warm.
Your loving sister, Nell
