Neptune and Jupiter planet tattoos on forearms
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two circular planet tattoos sit on separate forearms. The left shows Neptune in blues with pale streaks, and the right shows Jupiter in orange, brown and cream bands. Soft shading gives both spheres a rounded, realistic look, and a printed reference sheet with the planets' names lies beneath the arms.

The windfalls had been lying in the long grass since Tuesday, and by the last Saturday in August the wasps had claimed the Bramleys. Dad sent Owen and me down the far rows with two buckets and a torch, because the Perseids were due and he wanted the ladder out of the way before dark. Owen had a printout from the village library folded in four, showing a blue planet and a striped one, and he kept holding it up against the dusk as if he could match the colours to the sky.

Neptune's the far one, he said. Its light takes hours to reach it, and you'd never see it without a proper telescope. Jupiter's the big one. You could fit every other planet inside it and still have room for the moon. I told him that was showing off. Between us we filled one bucket with sound apples and half of the other with bruised ones, and I threw the bruised ones over the hedge for the badgers, which he said was cruel to the tree.
We sat on the wall while the sky went from peach to ink, and the first meteor cut across above the church. Owen tipped his head back and said, that's not a planet, and I said no, it's a bit of something that didn't quite make it. He went quiet after that, folding the printout smaller and smaller until it was the size of a stamp.
In the morning the dew had got into the paper he'd left on the wall. The blue and the orange had run together into one brown, like the bruise on a windfall.
