Never lose yourself script on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads never lose yourself in a cursive, handwritten-style script that runs diagonally from behind the ear down towards the neck. The lettering is set in dark ink with fairly even, thin strokes and sits against soft skin and brown hair pinned up at the top of the frame. The composition is a tight crop focused on the neck and ear, with a silver drop earring visible at the edge.

The lift at Harrow Point had stopped in the winter, and nobody on the ninth floor was surprised when the stairs began to lengthen. Mrs Pearl Dunmore said it was the damp. Her grandson said it was the man in the boiler room, who wanted company.

A girl called Nell Ashby, who had come up from the coast with one suitcase and a bad temper, took the stairs one evening counting her steps. At the eleventh landing there was no eleventh floor. The walls were the same green, with the same chalk suns drawn on them by children long since grown, and a voice from the landing above asked her, politely, what name she was going by now. She had forgotten her own. That frightened her more than the dark did.
Her gran had told her the old rule, the one used on the estate before the blocks went up: say your name out loud at every landing, and mean it, and the stairs will give you back your floor. Nell stood still and shouted her name into the concrete until her throat hurt. Somewhere below, a radio was reading the shipping forecast, and the door of the ninth floor flat opened under her hand.
She was home before the kettle boiled. Her mother was asleep in the chair with the telly murmuring. Nell took a biro and wrote on the back of a gas bill, pressing hard so it would not smudge: never lose yourself. She pinned it above the front door, where anyone leaving the flat would have to read it first.
