Dandelion seed heads behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Mixed · Photo

The image shows a woman's head turned to the side, with a sequence of four dandelion seed heads tattooed behind her ear and down her neck, each with a thin black stem. The seed heads are drawn in fine lines and shaded in red and orange, fading softly at the edges as they drift downwards. The soft-focus background and warm, natural light keep the tattoos as the clear focus of the composition.

Mother, the wind came off the hill again this morning and carried half the wool from the hedge, so I spent the day chasing it across the threshing floor with my skirts hitched up like a fishwife. You would have laughed. Your daughter, running after fluff.

The yellow weeds have gone to seed along the road to Larissa. Pappous used to say each head holds as many breaths as there are days in the year, and you must blow them all away before the first frost or the year does not count. I have been counting. Yesterday I picked forty-one from the ditch and tied them in a strip of red cloth that Nikandros's sister dyed with madder, so they would keep. The heads turn rust at the edges as they dry, then pale to nothing, like a candle burning down from the rim.

Nikandros found me at the well at dusk and asked why I was blowing on my own palm. I told him I was practising for the wedding wish. He said no wish would carry in air this still, and he is right, the evening is as flat as a sleeping dog. So I am folding three of the seeds into the wax tablet cover. Hold it up to the lamp by the window and count the threads.

When the wind turns, I will come home and blow them over your garden myself. Do not weep over the pots. Your loving daughter, Phaedra.
