Small rose tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a small rose tattoo on the skin behind an ear, with the head turned away from the camera so no face is visible. The design is drawn in a single thin black outline with simple shading on the petals, and the stem curves down with two small leaves. The image is warmly lit against a dark background, and metal ear piercings sit beside the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair came to Hollin Cross every October, when the hop-picking was done and the lanes had turned to mud. Nell Ashdown was twelve that year, and her job was to sit on the back step of the dodgems wagon and draw roses on the hands of anyone who paid a penny. She used a stub of black lead and a steady wrist, and she never drew a rose with its head lifted. Her grandmother said a rose with its head up was always looking for someone to leave with.

A carter called Tobias Vane came up the lane with two grey horses and a load of barrel staves. He had no money that year, so he paid her in a story instead, about a valley where the river ran backwards and the trout swam uphill to spawn. Nell liked him for it. He asked for a rose on the back of his hand, with the stem running down toward the knuckle. "Down," she told him. "Always down, or it will climb off you." He laughed and said he would be back before the frost, and she believed him, the way children believe in weather.

The frost came early that year and the fair packed up in a hurry. Nell rode the last wagon out in the dark, holding the lead rope and listening for hoofbeats that never came. Years passed. She kept the wagon, and the penny jar, and went on drawing roses for anyone who asked.

On the first cold morning of the next October, a man walked into the empty field alone, leading one grey horse with a broken halter. He held out his hand without a word. The rose was still there, faded to a thread, its stem running down and down until it reached the lines of his palm.
