Red rose behind the ear
Botanical · Neck · Colour · Photo
A small red rose with a green stem and leaves is tattooed on the skin behind the ear, with the head turned away from the camera. The petals are shaded in soft reds and the foliage in dark greens, giving a painterly, lifelike finish. The tattoo sits in the lower right of a soft-focus frame, with blonde hair pulled back on the left.

Dear Nell, the rose came back from the printers with the red all wrong, too orange in the shadow of the petals, and Mr Haldane wants it finished by Friday or the cover goes to the man from Spalding. I have been at the bench since six with a sable brush no bigger than a fingernail, mixing carmine into a little pool of gum arabic until it looks like wet cherries on a plate.

The trouble is that a rose always lies about its colour. Up close the petal is nearly black where it folds, then it goes pale as a healing bruise where the light catches the edge. Mother's bush by the back gate taught me that when I was seven. I kept asking why it looked different at noon and at dusk, and she said the flower doesn't care what colour it is, only what the sky is doing that afternoon.
Yesterday a woman came into the shop with a single stem wrapped in a damp tea towel, cut from a wall in Boston that she said her late husband had tended. She asked whether I could paint it small enough to carry, something she could keep without anyone asking questions. I told her I'd try, and I think she understood that I was really asking her to tell me where the light fell on it.
So I left the leaves a deep green, almost black where the stem bends, so the red would have somewhere to sit. I'll post the proof on Thursday. Look at the shadow under the top petal and tell me if it's right. I think it is.
