Black fine line outline tattoo of the New York City skyline with the Statue of Liberty on the outer thigh.

New York skyline with Statue of Liberty on thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of the New York City skyline runs across the skin, with the Statue of Liberty silhouetted at the left end and several tall towers rising across the middle and right. The tattoo is rendered in thin black linework with no shading or fill. The skin is warm in tone and the photo is taken from a phone, with a grey fabric background.

You learn the rules of Harbour View by the second week: the geyser takes four minutes to warm, the gulls win every argument on the roof, and nobody sits in the blue chair by the door. The man in room six gave his name as Sol and his address as a block in Flushing. He pays a month ahead in crisp fifty-pound notes and never leaves a crumb on the stairs.

On the Thursday you carry up his tea and find him at the window with a biro, drawing on the back of an old laundry list. He doesn't lift the pen. One line runs from the edge of the paper, climbs to a small green figure holding her torch, then rises and stacks itself into towers toward the right, like a row of teeth catching the light. "Never picked it up once," he says. "My father did one on a napkin in Brighton, the summer I was born. It's the only thing he ever finished."

You ask him why the statue comes first. He says it's where the boat came in, the first thing anyone sees, so you start there and keep going past it. On Saturday he leaves before the milk van. You find the list pinned inside the wardrobe door, the line broken in a few places where he stopped and started again. You frame it and hang it in the hall beside the post. Guests stop to trace it with a finger and ask which tower is which, and you tell them the truth: you've never been, but you can always find the little green woman at the left end, holding her torch up for the rest of them.
