Heartbeat line ending in a red heart and semicolon

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black single-line tattoo traces a heartbeat trace across the inner wrist, ending in a small solid red heart followed by a black semicolon. The linework is thin and even, with a clean, consistent weight along the peaks and troughs. Black ink dominates with a single red accent, and the design sits centrally on the wrist against a plain skin background.

The paper comes off the drum in a long grey ribbon every night at the Hollin Pit, and by the time you reach the top of the stair the ink has already dried on the spikes. Your father never trusted the new recorder. He said a machine could tell you the ground was moving but never why, so he kept the old pen on the winding house wall and read it himself, lips moving, the way other men read the racing page.

The winter the seam flooded, he showed you the bad night. A line that climbed like a hill and stopped dead at the top, then the tiny hook of a recovery, then a second climb. 'See that,' he said, tapping the glass with a nicotine finger. 'Nothing's finished. It just goes quiet for a bit and then it starts again.' You were sixteen and thought he meant the pit.

Years later, when the colliery was a car park and the drum sat in a council store, you found the strip rolled in a biscuit tin with his handwriting in the margin. Beside one spike he had drawn a small red heart, and after it a semicolon, the only mark he ever trusted, because it holds a sentence open for whatever comes next.

You bought a bottle of red ink from the shop on Front Street and copied the line onto the back of an envelope at the kitchen table, wobble for wobble, until the heart sat where his had been. Then you drew one more peak, a little higher than the rest, and left the page unfinished on purpose, the pen lifted, the ink still wet at the edge.
