Fine line black tattoo of a city skyline forming a heartbeat line, with a small red heart at the right end, on the inner forearm near the wrist.

City skyline heartbeat line on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A continuous black line traces a city skyline with a tall spired tower near the centre, then dips into a heartbeat-style trace that ends in a small red heart. The linework is thin and even, and the black ink is crisp against pale skin. The tattoo sits horizontally across the inner wrist, with a plain, softly textured grey-green background.

Dear Ines,

The spire is still standing, though the glass has gone out of the top three floors and the pigeons have claimed them. I climbed it last Tuesday with Oskar and a flask of tea that tasted of tin. From the landing you can see the whole line of the city laid out against the sky, every block where it always was, and the old monitoring cable running down the east side like a vein. Your grandfather used to say the tower was the city's chest and the lower districts its breathing. He was joking, mostly.

The cable still carries a trace. Oskar found the bank of recorders in the basement of the old transit office, all of them dead except one, and it printed a single strip before the paper jammed. He brought it up to me folded in four. The line climbs over the rooftops exactly as we remember them, tower, tower, spire, then the long fall toward the river. Then, at the far end, it stutters into a tight little loop. A red mark was inked there by hand, a heart, the sort a child draws in a school notebook. Somebody at the transit office must have made it on the last day before they shut the lights.

I am not going to tell you what it means. You would only roll your eyes. But I think the line is still going, and that the heart at the end is a promise somebody kept. Bring your sketchbook when you come in spring. We will trace it together, from the spire down to the water, and see whether the pulse picks up when we reach the bridge.

Love, Nan
