Peonies and lemon slice in a geometric frame on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows large peony blooms, a halved lemon and bare branches with buds, arranged inside a faceted, diamond-like outline. The work is built from fine stippling and dense dotwork, with shading that moves from solid black to pale grey to give the petals depth. It is entirely black and grey and fills the frame of the photograph against smooth skin on the upper leg.

The ovens were already ticking when I started zesting, ten to five and the radio still off, flour hanging in the cold air like breath. Mrs Pryce had one rule about the shop: the first tray out of the oven belonged to the street, not the till. I never argued with her. Lemon at that hour has a sharpness you feel in your back teeth, and I liked the way it cut through the smell of butter and proving dough.

Ruth ran the flower stall two doors down, and she was always leaving buckets of peonies on our back step that nobody had ordered. She would lean against the sink, stripping stems with her thumbnail, complaining about the ones that opened too fast and flopped by noon. I told her peonies were just petals that couldn't make up their minds. She said that was the nicest thing anyone had ever said about them, and she took a lemon slice with her tea every morning after that.

The week Mrs Pryce sold up, we were cutting the last sponges for a wedding order using a cardboard diamond I'd made to keep the lozenges even. When the final piece came off the board, Ruth picked up the template and held it to the window. Through the cut-out she could see the car park, the bare plane tree, and a grey sky with nothing yet on its branches. She said that was what a fresh start looked like in February: all the shape of it already there, waiting for the blooms.

I still have that template. Some mornings I hold it up to the glass before the sun comes over the roofs, and the lemon inside the diamond catches the first light and goes gold, the way the peel does when you press it to the window. Then I cut the first slice of the day and put it on the house.
