No Boundaries lettering in barbed wire on thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads No Boundaries in black cursive script, with the words enclosed by a loose circle of thin barbed wire lines. The linework is crisp and even, with the lettering slightly heavier than the wire. The photo is cropped to the thigh against a plain blue background, with the wearer in patterned denim shorts above.

Dear Nell, the wire went up on Tuesday, three strands strung between the two ash trees where the towpath bends under Hollis Bridge. Mr Corran says it's to keep the heifers off the path, though the heifers have never once shown any interest in walking it. Dad tied the Lark to the bollard and stared at the fence the way he stares at weather coming over the fields, as if it might change its mind if he waited long enough.

We got through by lifting the lowest strand with a sack, which Mum said was a sin against the farmer's dignity. Dad said Mr Corran had no dignity to speak of, and she didn't argue. At the lock above, a lad from the mill was sitting on the gate beam with a tin of black paint and a brush no thicker than a pencil. He was lettering two words along the crossbar of his bicycle, looping them in a loose cursive, and he had already drawn a ring of barbed wire round them in pencil, the spikes thin and careful, so the wire looked less like a fence and more like a frame somebody had chosen on purpose. He called it No Boundaries. I asked him if it was a warning or a dare, and he said he hadn't decided yet.
He was going to ride it up to the wire in the morning, he told us, and go through the middle instead of round the edge. I watched from the stern until the bend took him, the paint still wet on the frame and the sun catching the lettering every time he pedalled. Dad has folded the sack on the roof now, ready for the next time. Write soon, and tell Aunt Pen the hens are laying again, though she'll say it's only to spite her.
