The truth came out at Hatherton Lock, where the water stank of weed and Tom got the gate pole stuck in the mud. He asked me straight whether Mum had gone off with the milkman. I said no, which was a lie, because I had seen her bag packed under the bunk and kept quiet for three weeks. Tom looked at me the way Dad looked at a bad weld, and I understood that the words on the boat were not a rule at all. They were a wager.

We settled it that night, lying in the fore-cabin with the stove ticking. No lies, we agreed, and then, because it sounded like a promise that might hold, Just love. Mum came back in October with oranges in a string bag, and we never found out whether she had meant to stay away. The paint still says what it says. I have stopped trying to decide which half was the rule and which was the gift.
