No means no script with red hearts
Lettering · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the words No means No in black script lettering, with a solid red heart placed after each No. The linework is smooth and bold, with the red hearts outlined in black. Red and black ink are both present, and the close crop leaves only partial edges of another design visible at the sides.

The offer for flat 41 came folded in thirds through the letterbox on a Tuesday. She pinned it to the fridge with a magnet shaped like Skegness, took the marker from the junk drawer, and wrote one word under the figures: No.

The lift on the fourteenth floor had been broken for a fortnight, so the surveyor had to climb. He arrived on the landing wheezing, clipboard pressed to his chest, and asked whether Mrs Kettle might reconsider given the state of the building. Ruth looked past him at the balcony rail, where Mr Adeyemi from thirty-two had tied a row of red paper hearts with garden wire, one for every neighbour who had signed the petition. "The lift's been broken since the council stopped answering," she said. "Doesn't mean I've got to leave with it."
He went down the stairs without a word. On Sunday her granddaughter Bea came up with bacon rolls from the van at the bus stop and found her gran at the window, counting the cranes over the ring road. "They're still building the new ones," Bea said. "Shame you're not on the list." Ruth tore a roll in half and handed over the bigger piece. Lists, she said, were for people who had never needed a word of their own. Then she went back to the window, where the hearts on the rail turned slowly in the wind.
