Outlined heart with NOT YOU lettering
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A simple outline of a heart with the words NOT YOU written in capital letters inside it. The linework is a single, even dark ink line with no shading. The image is a close, straight-on shot of the skin, with the design in the centre and a plain, soft-toned background.

Sit yourself down on that coil of rope, and mind the kettle, it's been on since the lock gates went at dusk. You want the proper story or the one for tourists? Proper, then. This was the summer the Hatchett boys were towing coal up past Sonning, and every bargee on the Thames had an opinion about my hair.

Tobias Vane worked the lock at Sonning and he had a way of standing in the sluice spray like he'd paid for it. Every Saturday he'd come aboard with a paper bag of those chalky sweetheart hearts from the shop by the bridge, the ones with messages pressed into the front. He'd tip the bag onto the cabin table and make me pick. Be Mine. Call Me. Sweet Pea. I never once picked one of his.
Then one wet Saturday, I took the last heart out of the bag, turned it over with my thumb, and read it out loud so he'd hear: NOT YOU. He laughed till he choked on his tea. Then he sat very still and said, Well, that's me told, and he didn't come back for three weeks.
When he did, he had the sweet in his shirt pocket, gone soft and grey from the damp. He said he'd kept it to remind him what a fool he'd been, and I told him that was the first honest thing he'd ever said to me. We were married the next spring on the lock footbridge. He never ate another sweetheart as long as he lived, though he kept a whole tin of them on the mantel, and I never once asked him to throw them out.
