Black and white photo of a simple outlined heart tattoo containing the words NOT YOU in block lettering on bare skin.

Outlined heart with NOT YOU inside

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line outline of a heart sits on pale skin, with the words NOT YOU written in capital letters across its centre. The linework is a consistent dark black with slight variation in weight, and the lettering is hand-drawn in a plain sans-serif style. The image is greyscale and centred on the tattoo, with no other features in frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pritchard had sold pear drops and sherbet lemons from the same jar for forty-one years, and in all that time nobody had come into the shop on Quay Street asking for the candy hearts. They were a Valentine's thing, she said, pushing the tray across the counter, and the Valentine's thing had gone the way of the pilchard boats out of Port Wenna. Then Denny Rowe came in on the last Friday of February, wet from the harbour wall, and asked for twelve.

She tipped them out for him, pale pink and mint, each one stamped with a word: CALL ME, SWEET, YES, WAIT. He turned them over with a seriousness that made her want to laugh. Then he found the one he was after and held it up to the window light. It said NOT YOU in blue capitals, the letters worn so that the U had gone soft at the bottom and looked like a V.

"Who's it for?" she asked, because she always asked.

"Nobody yet," he said. "I want to know I've got one ready."

She rang up the twelve and didn't charge him for the worn one. She wrapped it separately in tissue paper, the way her mother had wrapped the bad coins, and put it on top of the bag where he'd see it first.
