No Regrets script lettering on skin

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script tattoo spelling the words No Regrets runs across smooth skin in a slightly diagonal, flowing arrangement. The linework is thin and even, with fuller strokes on the capitals and long tails on the R and g. The image is black and grey with soft shading in the background skin, and the composition is centred on the lettering.

Pauline had spent thirty years perfecting a signature no bank would question, so it unsettled her to see her old handwriting again. The Crown and Anchor function room smelled of lager and carpet shampoo, and by the coat hooks someone had pinned a sheet of lined paper behind perspex. It was a page from the Year Nine English jotter, and the loops on it still ran as if they were in a hurry to get somewhere.

Dev Patel, who had sat beside her for two years and copied her maths homework without once saying thanks, came over with two pints he had not asked her about. He said he had kept something too. From the inside pocket of his blazer he drew out a battered exercise book with a cracked spine, and opened it near the back. Under a wobbly fractions sum, in her long-tailed script, she read the words she had written when she was fourteen and furious with him: No regrets, Dev. Try again Friday.

She did not remember writing it, which annoyed her more than the sentence did. He had failed the test that week, cried in the bike sheds, and she had apparently decided that a few cheerful words would fix it. He said it had got him through his mum's illness and a job he hated, and that he had read it on the bus more times than he would admit.

Later, when the raffle was drawn and the room thinned out, Pauline took the pen from the reception table, the cheap biro on a string, and wrote her name in the visitors' book. Her hand did not hesitate. The capitals swelled, the g dropped its long tail, and the whole line leaned forward as if it had already forgiven her for something.
