Black script lettering reading NO REGRETS across a forearm, in a lettering style with flowing capitals.

No Regrets script on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with the words NO REGRETS written across it in a flowing, joined script. The letters are filled in a dark blue-black ink with smooth, even linework and a slightly soft, blurred edge. The arm fills the frame diagonally against a teal wall and a dark background.

Dear Maggie,

You asked on the phone why I never told you about Dad's brushes, and I've been turning that over all week. The truth is he never taught me to paint. He had a sable quill, a tin of japan black and a stencil of the words he put above the door of every shop he ever ran: NO REGRETS, in the joined-up copperplate he taught himself from a book bought off a stall in Ramsgate. He said a word only looks finished when the letters hold hands.

The Harbour Arms wanted it on their board that January, when the boats were laid up and nobody was drinking much. Mr Pell, the landlord, stood in the cold with his hands in his coat while I pulled the first curl of the N. He said, that's a funny thing to hang over a bar, Ted. Dad said a man who drinks there should have something to think about on the way home.

When the brewery sold up, the new people painted the board over in magnolia and didn't ask anyone. I kept the stencil. It's the one with the nicks where his knife slipped on the S, and I've been carrying it around in my handbag for years like a bus ticket I can't bring myself to use.

I've enclosed it. Hold it up to the window and you'll see the letters still run together, every one leaning on the next. Don't iron it flat. It has enough creases already.

Love, Jo
