You will not believe what Mr Okafor has done to the yard behind the chicken shop. I went round Tuesday with the scraps for the hens and found him on his knees between the bins, planting pink roses in old paint tins. Sixteen of them, he says, all along the back wall where the grease smoke has blackened the brick for thirty years. He wanted something to look at other than the extractor fan, he said, and I told him the extractor fan has never looked at anyone in its life.

He has a rule about the nuggets, mind. Nothing goes in the bin until the hens have had their go, and the good ones go to the Tuesday pensioners' lunch in foil with a pot of the pink sauce on the side. Mrs Bassett said it was the first time she'd felt like a duchess since 1971. The sauce is his mother's recipe, apparently. He won't tell me what's in it, only that it's a secret that happens to be mostly ketchup.

Last week the banners came. Lilac ribbon, painted by a sign-writer from Harehills who owed him a favour over a window. One says Nugg and the other says Life, and he hung them above the bench so that when you sit down with your tray you read them as a sort of instruction. I asked why he didn't just write Chicken Shop like a normal person. He looked at me as if I'd suggested he sell the roses for firewood.

Anyway, the roses are doing better than I am. Come up at the weekend and bring your secateurs. There's a bag of nuggets with your name on it, and it isn't the one with the ribbon.
