Number sequence 6655321 on the upper chest
Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the digits 6655321 tattooed in a row on skin below the collarbone. The numerals are drawn in solid black ink with uneven, hand-written strokes and slightly varied heights. The soft, warm skin tone and blurred background keep the focus on the small tattoo.

You are counting the knocks before the cage has even left the top, because your father taught you that the bell code is the only thing down there that does not lie. Six, six, five, five, three, two, one. Your thumb marks each one on the rail of the banksman's hut while the rope hums and the wet smell of the shaft comes up through the grating.

The sequence means the cage is going to the fourth level, the one they call the Dook, where the seam pinches down to nothing and a man has to lie on his side to swing a pick. Nobody on the surface knows that the bell is a joke between your father and the old deputy, who once rang it wrong on purpose to make you laugh. Six-six is for the men who are late. Five-five is for the men who are sorry about it. Three-two-one is the way home. You are twelve and you have never understood why grown men find that funny.
Tonight the knocks come one short. The cage stops at the second level, and the deputy's voice echoes up asking who is still down there. You lean out past the rail, lamp swinging, and see your father's lamp shrinking into the dark, the way it always does, not hurrying. You cannot shout over the pulley. So you knock it back, six, six, five, five, three, two, and then you wait, and at the bottom of the shaft something knocks once more, slow and certain, which is the only answer you will ever get.
