Bass clef tattoo behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small bass clef with two dots sits on the skin behind an ear, with dark hair visible at the left edge of the frame. The linework is thin and solid black, with no shading, and the tattoo is set against warm skin tones. The close, slightly angled composition keeps the tattoo as the clear focus.

The soundboard had split along the grain, so I spent three weeks steaming it in the algae tanks and pressing it flat between ceramic plates while the recyclers hummed through the bulkhead. Most of the old scores in the archive were pitched for a lower register, the kind meant to sit under everything and hold it up. Chords we'd lost in the hull breach of the second decade came back to me as fragments, bass notes with no melody above them, and I learned to read them the way you read a bruise.
On the last night I struck a low C and let it ring until the sensors stopped reporting it. The sound travelled down the spoke, through the crew decks and out into the cold, and somewhere a child I had never met began to hum the line back. I did not correct her. The old printed sheets had a small curled sign at the start of each stave, with two dots beside it, and I thought that was all the lost tunes had ever needed: a mark that showed where the floor was, so the rest could be built on top.
