Behind the mops there is a brass plate reading 9 3/4, screwed to bricks that never appeared on any plan of this station. The machine on the up side will sell you a half-fare to nowhere, and old Idris the porter swears the 4.10 stops there on Thursdays when the rain comes in sideways.

I have been keeping a tally on the back of the delivery sheets. Eleven people have asked about the fraction. Four bought tickets with it printed in the corner, in ink so black it looked wet. None were tourists. One was a girl of perhaps nine with a satchel too heavy for her, who asked whether the gap was for the trains or for the people, and then walked straight into the brickwork without looking back.

I did not follow her. I told myself the kettle needed watching and the Thursday timetable needed reprinting. Still, on Thursday I stood by the gap with rain down my collar, and the 4.10 came round the bend with its lamps lit, slowed, and let out no one at all, only a smell of peppermint and wet coal, and a single slip of card on the platform that read: Return journey not required.

I have kept the card in the drawer with the spare keys. I am not asking for a repair. I am asking you to take the brass plate off the wall before someone with a smaller satchel decides to find out where it leads.
