Oak leaves and acorns on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of two oak leaves with three acorns hanging from a short stem, shown on an arm. The leaves are outlined with soft shading in black and muted reddish-brown, with small highlights suggesting dew drops. Dark fern fronds sit at the lower edge of the frame, and black scrollwork and a dark bird are partly visible at the top and right.

Mind the step, there's a rook on the rail and he's been waiting all morning for his supper. Now, the Mary Ellen was built in Appledore from oak that was standing when my grandmother's grandmother was a girl. The shipwright, Tobias Crane, walked the hill above the yard every autumn with a sack, gathering every acorn the wind had dropped, and he planted them in the hedgerows like a man sowing for his own funeral.

Sixty years later the trees came down, one by one, to make her ribs. The old men swore you could still smell the rain in that timber, the way dew sits on a leaf before the sun gets to it. Tobias kept one pressed leaf in his almanac, brown at the edges, and he'd show it to any boy who asked why he was so stubborn about the bolts.
In the winter of the long gale, the Mary Ellen lost her mainmast off the Horn and drifted three weeks with a hold of salt cod and a crew who had stopped praying. Then one dawn a flock of rooks came down on the rigging, black as burnt paper, and the mate swore they were the same birds that used to nest in the Crane hedgerows. They pecked at the splintered oak until water beaded on the grain, and the old men said that was the ship remembering herself.
We limped into Falmouth on a jury mast with three acorns still in Tobias's coat pocket. He planted them the next spring. That's the whole trick, my love. You don't build anything worth keeping. You plant it, and then you wait for the rooks to come home.
