Black line swirl and flourish flash sheet
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of several separate ornamental designs drawn in black ink on white, each made of curling scrolls, tendrils and leaf-like sprays. The linework is thin and even, with small dots and beading along some of the stems. Shading is absent, and the designs are spaced evenly across a tall, narrow composition.

Oda was told the margins of the Varnholt psalter were to stay bare, as the Lord intended, and so every night after Vespers she dipped her quill in iron gall and drew in the spaces beside the psalms. First came a single tendril curling round the letter D, then a leaf like a closed hand, then a row of small beads along a stem that she counted by candlelight so she would not sleep through the hours. Father Piet never looked at the edges of anything. He looked at the centre of the page, where the gold was.

One night a scroll grew too long for the vellum. It slid over the edge of the desk, down the leg of the stool, and out through the crack beneath the shutter, and by morning it had found the river and was lifting a dropped glove from the reeds. Oda watched from the window as the ink-thin vine uncurled over the water like a cat stretching in the sun. The beads along its stem had turned to dew, and the dew caught the light the way the gold leaf did on the page.
Father Piet found the flourishes the next day, when the lectern was wrapped in them and the bell rope had been caught in a spiral. He roared, and he seized her quill, and he tried to scratch out the nearest curl with the blade of his penknife. His hand shook. Instead of cutting, he drew one small loop himself at the foot of the page, neat and careful, the way he signed his name.
The next morning the vines had withdrawn into the margins and lay still as if they had never moved. Beside the psalm for the faithful there was a new flourish, and it was not hers. Oda found the sill still wet with dew, and a single bead of ink left on the stone, shining like a drop of rain.
