Off with her head lettering in a club shape
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The design sets the words OFF WITH HER HEAD into the outline of a club suit, with the first lobe filled by a tight spiral. The letters use bold, hand-cut black strokes with varied heights and slanted serifs, and the stem is formed by the words HEAD stacked downwards. It is a solid black design on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

At the edge of Hollin, where the beeches gave way to ash, old Ellen Marrow kept a workshop with one window facing the trees. Every autumn the steward sent her a list of boards to be cut and painted, and every autumn she cut them from the same leaning ash that the village called the Clubwood, for the knot that swelled at its crown like a fist.

This year the steward's note asked for a board bearing a decree, written in a hand she knew from the tithe rolls. OFF WITH HER HEAD, it said, and beneath that the name of the miller's girl, Sabine Greaves. Ellen had painted the Queen's cards for midsummer, the ones the children fought over at the well, but she had never been asked to write a death on wood. She sat with the adze across her knees until the candle guttered. Then she took her knife and cut the letters tall and crooked, leaning them like men against a wind, and set the words around the shape of a club.
When she came to the first lobe she could not make the letters lie flat, so she let them coil into a spiral, the way bracken uncurls in spring, and the O of OFF became the eye at its centre. The stem she cut long, HEAD stacked down the shaft, and at its foot she carved nothing at all, leaving the grain to run into the earth. By morning the board was finished, and the steward's boy came climbing the track to collect it.
He turned it over twice, frowning at the spiral. "It's a card," he said. "The Queen wanted a card." Ellen wiped her hands on her apron. "Then tell her a club is for clearing ground," she said, "and the wood came from a tree that was already falling." The boy carried it off down the hill. The next spring a single green shoot came up from the stump by the workshop door, and Ellen left it alone.
