Mind the loose brick, love, and don't lean on the gate, it'll tell on you. Right. You want to know how the yew at the end of Hollins Row came to say a word. Ada Pryce did it, the summer her brother went off to sea and never wrote. She had a pair of shears older than my mother and a ladder with one good rung.

Everyone on the Row laughed. Mr Dunmore leaned over his fence and said a hedge is a hedge, girl, it hasn't the sense to spell. She didn't argue. She just climbed up each morning and clipped a little more, looping the tall stems round like the curls on a capital letter, so that by August the thing had a long swash at either end, reaching out like arms that couldn't decide whether to wave or hold on. Then the word itself, lettered in dark green in the middle, joined up so close you had to squint to read it.

The winter came hard and the frost took the tips off half the roses on the Row. Ada's yew sat there grey-black and nobody mentioned it. But in March the swashes started putting out new shoots, and the letters went green again from the inside out. Mr Dunmore, who had stopped speaking to her over a boundary wall, came round with a pair of his own shears and asked if she'd show him how the last loop went.

So that's the word. Believe, written in a hedge by a girl nobody thought would finish it. Go on, take a look at it on your way out. Mind the brick.
