Small fine line Olympic rings tattoo in colour on the upper thigh of a person wearing a patterned swimsuit.

Olympic rings on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A small tattoo of the five Olympic rings sits on the outer upper thigh, with the rings drawn as thin coloured outlines in blue, black, red, yellow and green. The skin looks slightly glossy and reddened around the design, and the wearer's patterned swimsuit and hand are visible above it. The tattoo is centred in the frame against a blurred indoor background.

Rain had been coming sideways through Hollis Market since nine, and Ruth had stopped pretending the tarpaulin over her trestle table kept anything dry. She sorted a tin of loose pin badges with her thumb, the way her father had taught her, feeling for the cold weight of enamel. Most were football clubs and bus companies. Near the bottom, tangled in a shoelace, was a single badge of five interlocking rings, the blue one chipped down to bare brass.

A lad in a wet anorak stopped at the table and asked if it was worth anything. He was maybe fifteen, clutching a Polo mint tin with his bus fare counted out in coins. Ruth told him the truth, which was that nobody paid for chipped things, and that the rings were older than his mum. He turned the badge over and read the back aloud, the maker's stamp half rubbed away, and said his grandad had once squeezed onto a neighbour's sofa with the whole street to watch a match from a city he'd never seen.

She didn't know why she pushed the badge across to him for nothing. Maybe it was because the chipped ring still held its neighbours in place, the way a chain does when one link wears thin. "Five of them hold it together," she said. "Losing one doesn't stop the others being linked." He pocketed it without a thank you and ran off through the puddles toward the bus stop.

Ruth tipped the tin back into the box and wiped the table with her sleeve. The rain kept drumming on the tarpaulin, and the shoelace lay coiled on the wet boards where the badge had been.
