Infinity symbol with swirls on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black fine line infinity symbol sits on the inner forearm, decorated with curling swirls and two small hearts, one in red and one outlined in black. The linework is thin and even, with a red accent on the heart and the inner swirls. The photograph is taken at a slight angle against a plain, softly lit cream background, with the wearer's shoulder and necklace in frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire had to be bent while it was still warm from the forge, Mrs Pryce said, or it would sulk and spring back at you. Nell had already scorched two fingers that morning and was not about to waste the one good length she had been given. Her father had sent her down to the smithy with a bag of copper off-cuts and a question he would not ask aloud, only tapping the anvil until she understood it.

On the far bench lay the old cage chain, its links worn bright where a hundred men had gripped it on the way down. Nell thought of the board at the top of the shaft, the chalk numbers that had not been wiped since Tuesday, and of her father standing in front of it with his cap in both hands. She bent a loop, then another, and each time the wire ran out and had to be turned back on itself, so that the line she was making kept crossing its own path like a stream finding its way round a stone.

Her father watched without speaking. When she finally had a shape that looked right, it still would not close at the crossing, and she felt the old hot shame of a thing done badly. He took the pliers from her, gave one small turn at the middle, and the figure ran unbroken from one end to the other, the sign the schoolmaster drew on the slate to mean something that never stops.

Nell pressed a drop of red enamel into the hollow where the two loops met, the colour of the lamp glass her mother used to polish before the strike. "Take it up to the chapel," her father said, not looking at her. "Tell them the lads will come up the way they went down. Round and round, and back to the top."
