Black fine line script tattoo forming an infinity symbol with a small heart, placed on the ribs.

Infinity symbol with script quote on ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the side of a torso, showing an infinity symbol formed by looping cursive script. The words read "Together forever, maybe in distance but never in heart, never apart", with a small heart outline at the end of the lower loop. The thin, even linework is shown in black only against the skin, and the diagonal framing places the design across the centre of the image.

The rain has found its way under the awning again, so this letter is going on the back of a button card, the only paper left on the stall that isn't spotted with damp. Mrs Okafor from the fishmongers keeps asking when you're coming home, and I keep telling her Aberdeen is further than the moon, which she doesn't believe.

Yesterday I emptied the tin of odd buttons you left under the till. Mum always said a button without a pair was a sentence without an ending, and I thought of that while I sorted them. There were forty-one. Brass ones from a navy coat, a horn one shaped like a half-moon, a little pearl from the christening gown we never finished unpicking. I laid them out on the trestle in a loop, a figure of eight, the way you used to draw it on the steamed-up window of the van, and the rain dripped through the gap in the awning right where the two loops cross.

I know you think I'm soft for it, but I've put one of the brass buttons in the envelope with this letter. Sew it onto whatever you're wearing when the North Sea gets too loud. Mum's line from the card she sent you still holds: maybe in distance, but never in heart. I've decided it counts as a promise, and promises don't need a postcode.

I've drawn a small heart on the back of this card, next to the price of a reel of blue thread. Tomorrow I'll stitch the pearl beside it and hang the loop on the stall where the wind can get at it. I won't sell it until you write back.
