Black outline loops and ovals on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black outline tattoo on the inner forearm. Rounded loops, ovals and curved shapes are stacked in a diagonal column running down the arm, with a few shapes slightly flattened or teardrop-like. The lines are a uniform, bold black with no shading, set against pale skin and a softly blurred cream background.

The air pump in Mr Adeyemi's flat on the nineteenth floor had a cough, a wet click every fourth breath, and he swore the bubbles came up in order because the fish taught them. I believed him for most of that winter. Every evening I climbed the stairwell with a tin of flakes he couldn't carry, past the broken lift and the graffiti shaped like a lighthouse, and watched the bubbles rise in a slanted line from the air stone to the surface.

He called the bubbles his ledger. The big round ones were rent days, the flattened ones were the nights his son rang from Leeds, and the little teardrops were the mornings he couldn't get out of bed. He drew it for me on the back of a council letter so I'd know what I was feeding. I said it was daft. He said I'd be surprised what a column of air could hold.
In February the power went off across the whole block, and the pump fell silent. When the lights came back on I found him at the tank with a torch, counting the bubbles that had stopped. He'd lost count somewhere past the middle, and he wanted me to tell him how many were missing.
I didn't know. So I took the pencil from behind his ear, drew a fresh column on the back of the council letter, and filled it with every circle I could remember from that winter, and we sat there until the pump coughed back to life.
