Om symbol and lotus tattoos collage
Botanical · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A collage of six photographs of tattoos on skin, mostly featuring the om symbol paired with lotus flowers, with one panel showing a lotus and cherry blossom branch. The linework ranges from fine outlines to bold black shapes, with some panels using soft grey shading and others using purple, pink, yellow and blue ink. Each panel is framed against the skin, with the tattoos centred or sitting along the neck, chest or ribs.

Ada Marsh had been told the bell would not ring true until the pond was drained, so she waited in the orchard through the last weeks of August, watching the windfalls split open on the grass and the wasps grow sluggish on the sugar. Her father's foundry had gone cold over the winter, and the bronze in the crucible had formed a grey skin that she skimmed each morning with a ladle.

Beyond the orchard wall lay the lotus pond the old abbey had left behind, its pads broad as dinner plates and its blooms folding shut at dusk. One evening she rowed out with a jar of cold tea and found the pink flowers closed like hands. The water hummed beneath the weed, low and steady, and she thought that hum must be the note her father had never managed to cast.
She poured the bell in the last week of the month, while the cherry tree by the gate dropped its late leaves onto the warm wash. The mould cracked on the third day. She sat by the cooling pit with her knees drawn up and listened through the wall until she could feel a note in her own chest that matched the pond, and then she cut it into the clay shoulder of the mould with a bone stylus: a single curling sign, round and open at the top like a bloom unfolding.
When the bell was hung and the first wind came up off the orchard, it rang once and kept on ringing long after the clapper had stopped, a sound that rippled the pond from the wall to the reeds. Her father climbed down the ladder, looked a long time at the shoulder of the bell, and said nothing. Ada took his hand and walked him out to see the water.
