Black and grey fingerprint flower tattoo with a script word family on the upper back and shoulder, shown in two side by side photos.

Fingerprint flower with family script

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A flower tattoo has petals and a centre made of fingerprint whorls, with a stem leading down to the script word family and two fingerprint-whorl leaves. The linework is dark and solid, with grey shading inside the whorls and no colour ink. The left photo shows the tattoo close up on a shoulder, and the right photo shows it lower on the upper back near the neck, with the design centred in the frame.

Don't you go breathing on that window, our Nell, you'll fog the frost and the whole street will know you're up past your bed. Sit down where I can see your hands. Hands tell you more than faces do, and the pit taught us that.

Your great-gran Ada had hands like a bag of spanners. Every night after the lamp was lit she'd press them flat on the kitchen table, one finger at a time, pressed into a tin of blacking and onto brown paper, with the whole house watching. Thumbs for the men going down, forefingers for the lads, and a little one for the babies who were not yet sure which way was up. The overman kept the sheets in a drawer at the lamp-room, so they'd know whose was whose if the roof came in.

Ada cut the prints round the whorls and pasted them on a card. Seven petals, one for each of us living, and a centre made from her own thumb. Under them she drew a stem in pencil and wrote the one word that mattered. Your grandad called it daft. Then came the winter the seam flooded and the men were brought up in ones and twos, and that card was the only thing in the house that never went quiet.

When she died we found it under the flour bin, every petal still pressed flat. Your mam had a lad in Barnsley copy it onto paper that would last, and now it's been given to the family for keeping, so you can carry us about wherever you go. Now come here and let me see what you've been up to.
