Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The image shows a large rose with layered petals and dark green-leaning leaves, tattooed across the shoulder and upper back. The left panel is in colour, with magenta and deep purple petals, soft shading and dark outlines. The right panel shows the same design in black and grey, with smooth tonal shading that gives the petals a soft, realistic look.

Her nephew Tom, who drove the lorry and held opinions about everything, leaned in the caravan door. "Paint it grey, then," he said. "Nobody in the back row can tell the difference." She looked at the rose she had painted on the ring curtain forty summers back, magenta and layered like a tight fist of silk, and thought of the girl who had worn the real one pinned at her shoulder every night of that season, a wine-dark bloom in a silver clip that caught the spotlight.
She mixed the grey as instructed, and it came out flat as wood ash. So she unscrewed the last tube of magenta, painted the rose on a sheet of card meant for the posters, and then the leaves, dark as holly after frost, leaning the way the real ones had leaned. Tom came back at dusk and stood a long while in the wet grass.
"They'll only print it in grey," he said. "So the colour's just for us."
"Then it's for us," Ada said, and capped the paint. The card dried on the trestle, the petals darkening as they set, the way she had always known they would.
