Om symbol tattoo on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bold black Om symbol tattoo on a wrist, with the lines drawn in a single solid ink. Stacked metal and crystal bangles sit above the tattoo, and the background shows a perfume bottle, a black eyeliner pencil, a tube of liquid liner and a compact. The image is warm-toned and softly focused, with the tattoo placed in the lower left of the frame.

Under the counter sheets I found his notebook. Most of it is accounts, but on the last page, in the careful capitals he used for price tags, he had written OM and beneath it a row of little hooks, the way a child draws a snail. Nothing else. I thought at first it was a shopping list. Then I remembered the mornings he sat on the step before the shutter went up, eyes shut, humming one low note until the bus went past, and how he made me do it with him, breathing out until my ribs hurt.

I drew the symbol the way he would have, in one stroke without lifting the pen. It came out crooked. I laughed, and the sound went round the empty room and came back to me lower than I sent it.

I am keeping the bottle. I am keeping the notebook. The bangles I will take to the market on Saturday and let go to whoever wants them.
