Her son Tom wanted to ride down to Kendal for the vet, because the young ram had a cough that rattled like a loose gate. Each morning she gave him the same answer. The beck was iced over, the mare was lame in the near fore, and the sky above the fell had a yellow edge that meant more weather was coming. Wait, she told him. On the twelfth day the thaw came in a single night. By morning the beck ran brown and loud under the bridge and the lane showed black again. Tom went down to Kendal and came back by dusk with the vet, the medicine, and a paper twist of tea that his mother had asked for and never once in her life bothered to make.

That evening she took the nail and drew a line through the last mark. Then she stood in the cold doorway and looked up at the rest of the lintel, where the marks ran back past Christmas to the autumn. There were a great many of them, and every one had been enough.
