Be kind handwritten script design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black, single-weight handwritten script reads Be kind, with a looping swash extending from the B beneath the word. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design sits on a plain white background. It is a drawing of a design rather than a photograph of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has sealed the Greywater Inn since Tuesday, and you are the only one awake when the woman in room six comes down the back stairs with a single sheet of paper folded into a square. She sets it on the reception desk, weighted with the brass bell, and asks whether the postman still walks the lane to Holm when the drifts are up to the gatepost. You tell her he does not, not until the thaw, and she nods as though that is the answer she expected.

She has been writing all week, you have noticed, at the corner table by the cold grate, her pen moving in long unbroken strokes that loop back under themselves. Her hand is looser than her face. This morning she asked for a stamp you do not have, and an envelope you do, and you gave her one from the drawer that still smells of the old landlord's pipe.

When you come back at dawn the bell is still on the paper. You unfold it expecting a list of grievances or a will. There are two words in the middle, in that same looping hand, and a tail of ink curling off the left edge toward the bottom corner, like a footpath vanishing under snow. Beneath it she has written nothing else. Room six is empty, the fire is out, and the front door has been left on the latch.

You pin the sheet above the range where the staff keep their notices, then walk out along the lane with the envelope in your coat, following her tracks as far as the gate. The snow has already started to fill them in.
