A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lane by four o'clock, and by six the only guests left were two drovers who had argued about a horse since noon. Mam had gone up to bed with her knees wrapped in flannel. I was left with the ledger, the coal scuttle, and the chalkboard behind the bar where she wrote the specials in her looping hand.

Someone had rubbed out the specials and written two words instead, in the chalk we keep for the cellar tally. I didn't know who. The stranger who had come in out of the blizzard, boots packed with ice, had sat by the fire and said almost nothing. Then the taller drover knocked a tankard off the table, and the stranger was on his knees before anyone else moved, gathering the shards and pressing the biggest one into the man's palm so he wouldn't cut himself.

"Be kind," I read aloud, to nobody in particular.

The shorter drover snorted. "Easy to say when you've a warm bed and a roof that doesn't leak."

I thought about that while I bolted the door and listened to the wind try the latch. Mam's roof had leaked for ten winters, and she had never once complained to a guest. In the morning the lane was ploughed, the drovers were gone, and the chalk was still there, unsmudged, with the stranger's coat folded over the settle where he had slept. I left the words up and didn't wipe them.
