"One step at a time" script on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a foot showing the words "one step at a time" in flowing cursive script, running diagonally across the top and side of the foot. The letterforms have smooth, bold strokes with decorative loops on the descenders and capitals, set against a dark background. The image is monochrome with soft lighting that picks out the skin texture around the lettering.

Agnes Dunmore had counted the steps of the broken stair at Carrick Hollow for three mornings before she trusted them. Forty-one up to the wind chamber, and one gone at the turn where the winter gales had taken the rail with it. She climbed with a bucket of lime on her hip, mortar dust in her hair, and her knees complaining at every landing.

The contractor from Inverness had wanted the whole thing pulled out and replaced with a steel ladder bolted to the wall. Agnes had said no before he finished his sentence. Her grandfather had cut those treads by hand the summer before the roof came down, and he had chiselled something into the newel post that nobody had bothered to read since the sheep moved in.
She reached the post on the thirty-eighth step and rubbed the lichen off with her sleeve. The letters ran in a looping hand, the tails swinging out like a fishing line: one step at a time. Her grandfather had never hurried a day in his life. Her grandmother used to say he could take a whole morning to choose a chisel. Agnes laughed out loud, and the sound went up the empty well of the stair and came back to her twice.
The missing tread took her until dusk. She cut a block from the fallen rubble, dressed it with the old point, and wedged it in with lime while the light went out of the arrow slits. When she finally stood on it and let her whole weight drop, the stone didn't so much as tick. She went up the rest of the stair without counting, and for once she didn't mind how long it took.
