All of time and space script on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black script tattoo spelling the phrase all of time and space across the upper chest near the collarbone. The letters are thin, cursive and evenly weighted, in a single dark ink with no shading. A diagonal dark strap crosses the frame, and hair is visible at the top right.

You will tell me I am being soft, Ruth, but the lost property tin at Carrow Junction has no room for sentiment. Umbrellas, a pair of spectacles, one child's glove in February. Yesterday it held a single card, folded twice, with three words written on the front in pencil that I could not stop reading. All of time and space. No name, no station, nothing to say who left it on the bench by platform two.

I knew the hand, though. Your brother Edwin wrote like that, letters leaning forward as if they were late for something. He used to say the railway was just a long argument about where everyone ought to be. He went north on the 6.40 in March and I have not heard a word since, so you can stop looking at me like that. I am not asking you to fetch him back. I am only telling you the card is in my drawer now, under the timetables.

Mr Pargeter at the ticket hatch says I should post it on to the Lost Property Office in York. I have a better idea. On Thursday I will take the card out to the end of platform two when the last train has gone and read the words aloud to nobody. Then I will put it back in the tin, marked for collection, and let whoever comes looking decide what the rest of the sentence was meant to be.

Write to me care of the hatch. Tell me which platform you are on, and I will tell you the time.
