One step at a time script on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A foot is shown from above with the words "one step at a time" tattooed across the top in black, handwritten-style script, with a small outlined heart placed after "step". The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The toenails are painted red with white dots and a yellow accent on the big toe, and the plain background is out of focus.

I said three summers, same as you always quoted, and he laughed the way men laugh when they have not yet looked at the rock. You would have liked him. He wanted everything finished by Michaelmas.

I have the chisel you left on the windowsill. Mrs Abbot from the chapel took it for sharpening and brought it back on Tuesday with a note asking whether you still meant to carve the words on the first tread. I did not know what she meant until I found your sketch pinned inside the tool box, one line in your square capitals, and a small heart drawn after it like a full stop you could not bring yourself to write.

So I went down this morning with the chisel and a bag of lime and started at the bottom, where the path leaves the shingle. The stone was cold and the gulls were making their usual fuss. I cut the first letter, then the second, and by noon I had only got as far as the first word. I am not in a hurry, Tom. Nobody is. The tide will come in whether I finish or not.

When you come back to see it, mind the third step. I have left it a little high on purpose, so you have to lift your foot. Love, Ellen.
