Open locket with Jack and Sally on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

An open oval locket hangs from a looped ball chain, with Jack Skellington in the upper frame and Sally in the lower frame, both drawn in a cartoon style. The locket and chain are shaded with soft greys and highlights to give them depth and a metallic look. The design fills most of the frame over pale skin on the outer thigh.

Nobody at the Crowley Lane reunion could agree on who had been the clever one, so they asked Margery Tuck, who had kept the school register since 1987 and forgot nothing except her own birthday. She said it was the boy who drew skeletons in the margins of every exercise book, and the girl who stitched her own hair ribbon into a rag doll and carried it everywhere until the caretaker confiscated it.

Tobias Crane arrived late, in a coat that smelled of rain, with a locket on a ball chain looped twice round his fingers. He opened it at the buffet table and turned it so the room could see. On one side a grinning pumpkin-headed man reached toward a drift of paper snow. On the other, a stitched girl with her eyes shut waited in a tilted hollow. Someone said, "Is that the Hallowe'en one?" and Tobias said it was older than that, and older than the film, and older than the bus stop where he had first lost his nerve.

Ivy Marrow, who had sewn the doll's seams with a darning needle in the cloakroom, went quiet. She took her own locket from under her jumper. Hers was empty. She had bought it at a car boot sale the year they left, meaning to put something in it and never deciding what. Tobias closed his shut, and she closed hers, and the two of them stood there with the chains tangled between them like a question nobody had asked in twenty-six years.
