Heart padlock and skeleton key tattoos

Neo-trad · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side. The left shows a grey, shaded heart-shaped padlock with ornate scrollwork and a keyhole, and the right shows a grey skeleton key with a decorative bow, both with pink ribbons wrapping around them. The linework is bold and clean with soft grey shading, and the pink ribbons provide the only colour against the greys.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ashdown brought the blank in wrapped in a pink handkerchief, and she would not let me weigh it. Brass, she said, the heart shape pressed from a tin she'd had off her mother. I told her a padlock that size would never hold anything worth holding, and she said that was rather the point, since nobody would think to look inside a heart.

I cut the key first, which my old master always said was the wrong order. Skeleton bit, a bow like a clover leaf, the wards filed fine enough to turn on a breath. The scrollwork on the lock took three evenings. She sat on the stool by the vice and read me letters from a man in Gdansk, and each time she reached the end she folded the page into quarters and tucked it behind the silk ribbon she had brought, a length the colour of a boiled sweet.

The turn came at the start of the third week. She did not collect them. When I came down one morning the handkerchief lay folded on the counter, empty, with a pencilled note asking me to keep the key until someone asked for the lock. Nobody did. I hung the key on the nail above the bench, where the rain could not reach it.

Forty-one years on, the silk has faded to the colour of weak tea, and the padlock still sits in the drawer under the spare springs. Young Ellis asked me last spring why I never sold them. I told him a lock is only half a promise until somebody comes back with the other half, and I was not going to sell a promise that had nothing to do with money.
