Open safe with cash on the side of the head
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of an open safe with its door swung outward and a round combination dial visible, with a small stack of green banknotes below it. The safe is rendered in smooth grey shading with highlights along its edges, giving it a three-dimensional look. The money is the only colour, and the image is a close side-on view of the head with the ear and part of the eye visible.

The combination for the ticket office safe at Thornmere Road had been the same since 1987, which is why Mr Pryce wrote it in biro on the inside of the cupboard door, where anyone who needed it could find it. Nobody ever needed it. I was the night porter, and the only thing I was paid to guard was the left luggage shelf, forty-odd brown cases nobody had claimed since the last strike.

On the third Tuesday of February a man in a camel coat came to the window at twenty to midnight with a holdall and a story that began with his brother. He wanted the bag he had left in the safe that afternoon. I told him the safe was locked and the key was in Manchester. He laughed, took a wad of notes from his inside pocket, held together with a perished rubber band, and laid them on the counter like a dealer showing his hand. Green, soft at the corners, a little damp.
I counted them while he watched me count. Four hundred and twelve pounds, and a single ticket to Carlisle dated the previous spring. I pushed them back across the counter and recited the rules, and he said the rules were what his brother had been paid to follow. Then he walked off towards the footbridge, and I turned to the squat grey door with its round dial stopped at nothing, and I thought how easily it would swing open if you knew the numbers, and how little the numbers would tell you about the people who had put the money in.
At six the cleaner found the holdall hanging on the hook behind the door of the Gents, zipped shut and empty except for one banknote folded into a swan. I left it there for the police. The safe stayed closed, and so did I, on whatever I had nearly learned.
