Open book tattoo behind the ear
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close side view of a person's head and neck shows a small open book tattoo sitting directly behind the ear. The book has a solid black outline with dark shading on the pages and spine, and no colour is visible. The plain background and tight crop keep the focus on the tattoo, with dreadlocks framing the top of the frame.

You are fourteen the winter the abbot takes the scriptorium's oldest gathering from you and sends it down to the binder in the valley. The wax is still warm on your thumb from sealing the last quire. Brother Anselm says the vellum has gone brittle at the spine, and that a book which will not open is only a box with ideas trapped inside it.

So you sit with the lamp at your left elbow, bent over the cracked boards, and learn to coax them apart with a bone folder and a breath of steam from the kettle. Each leaf lifts like a wing that has forgotten flight. You count the stains the older monks left behind: a ring of walnut brown here, a blot shaped like a thumbprint there. Nobody tells you the book is a little dishonest about its age until you find a colophon glued beneath the endpaper, written in a hand that belongs to nobody you know.
That night you copy it into your own tally book, letter by letter, until the candle gutters. In the morning the abbot reads your copy aloud in chapter and stops at the name at the end, a girl who sold her shoes to buy parchment for a psalter that was never finished. He closes the cover gently and sets the book on the lectern, spine up, so that anyone who passes can see it is still open at the page where it began.
